The other day I wrote about inserting special characters into text documents, advertising the use of KCharSelect for those happy users of the KDE desktop (or CharacterMap, its GNOME equivalent). Let me advertise it a bit further, because it has more in it than meets the – rashly looking – eye.

LibreOffice startup tweaks
In the good old LibreOffice days, when versions 3.x or 4.x were all around, I used to have the Quickstarter icon in my system tray. Twas useful to quickly open a (new) document or start from a template. Alas! tis gone in version 5.x. However, there is a tweak to solve this.
LibreOffice minor misfortunes
No-one is perfect, not even the most widely used open-source office suite, LibreOffice. It does have its small annoyances. From not printing a simple dash, to making your whole KDE desktop crash. How to deal with it? The first problem was solved by upgrading, the second seems to be persistently neglected and hence no solution […]
Upgrading Ubuntu Server
My home server runs on Ubuntu Server. So far that was the 14.04 LTS (‘Trusty Tahr’) version. But since Canonical has made available the first point release of the newer 16.04 LTS (‘Xenial Xerus’) version, i.e. version 16.04.1, upgrading became an option. Ubuntu actually makes this simple for users – but be forewarned, there are […]
Printing on Linux
In the old days printing on a Linux computer could be a bit of a hassle and it was anything but a matter of simply plug & play. CUPS (the Common Unix Printer System) has always done a great job organizing and executing print jobs. (It still does, even now Apple has required the source […]
Getting out & back again
OpenStreetMap (OSM) has become a proven alternative to GoogleMaps, BingMaps, iOS Maps , HERE Maps (just rebranded as HERE WeGo) and other proprietary navigation software. Still, GoogleMaps seems to be the most obvious for most people. You can easily look up any location around the globe, or plan your trip. But, of course, all of […]
Veilig emailen
Secure & easy messaging II
Earlier I posted about Telegram. I deemed it preferable to WhatsApp. And I still do. Meanwhile WhatsApp did improve: end-to-end-encryption has been added recently as a default setting, and this feature was developed in collaboration with Open Whisper Systems, a company recommended by no less than Edward Snowden. So, security is taken serious now. Yet, […]
Dropbox icon work-around
Dropbox is a kind of daily tool, even for suspicious Linuxees. I usually start it to synchronize and after that close it again. But while doing so, the icon in my system tray is very useful. Now, probably by means of bugging, it had disappeared. So I could not see if Dropbox was active, nor […]
You shall not pass!
For many reasons we gather a great many passwords, usernames, PINs, logins and the likes. Which may even lead to this horrible nightmare when you approach the Pearly Gates and you cannot remember your PIN… So, how to store all these data in a safe place and still have them near at hand whenever you […]
